Undeniably, class 10th is the vital year in every student’s life. The pressure of board exams paired with the confusion about the stream and career selection make students feel like a cat on hot bricks. Every year, millions of students appear in the CBSE class Streams After the 10th board exams and find themselves at the career crossroads with a dilemma about which stream to choose. However, making the right career choices is important to make progress toward a bright future because if one makes a poor decision, they will be forced to live with the repercussions for the rest of their life. Hence, to help 10th to 11th moving students, here we present a complete guide about the streams and career Counseling options to choose after 10th class.
There are three main career streams – Science, Commerce & Arts/Humanities.
The stream encourages creativity, critical thinking, and leadership qualities among students. Sociology, History, Psychology, Literature, Political Science, Economics, Geography, Philosophy, etc. are some of the core subjects included in the Arts/ Humanities stream.
Referred to as study of trade and business, commerce stream is mostly opted by students having a knack for business, economics, numbers & statistics. Business Economics, Accountancy, Business Study, and Business Law are the core subjects of the commerce stream.
Science is the most opted and preferred stream for students and parents probably because it presents many lucrative career options including engineering, medical, IT, and even research roles.
The stream helps students develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills that unlock doors to many well-respected and highly-paid job opportunities.
Physics, Chemistry, Biology, and Mathematics are the fundamental subjects included in this stream. Along with theoretical knowledge, the stream requires you to gain practical experience in laboratories as well.
There are two main branches in the science stream – Engineering and Medical.
Engineering requires students to develop critical thinking, conceptual learning, and analytical skills. Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics (PCM), are the core subjects of engineering.
B.E. (Bachelor of Engineering) & B. Tech. (Bachelor of Technology) are two of the most popular engineering courses. For Indians and NRI students, India boasts the world’s best and most renowned engineering institutes: IITs, NITs, IIITs & CFTIs that open a plethora of job opportunities for students worldwide.
To gain admission to these institutes, students are required to qualify the national level entrance exam JEE (Joint Entrance Exam) which is conducted in two stages: JEE Main & JEE Advanced.
Qualifying JEE Main is mandatory for JEE Advanced which is obligatory to gain admission to IITs. Due to the limited number of seats available, competition is fierce. However, for Indian expatriates in the Gulf & other foreign nations, NRI quota is applicable (except in IIT). A total of 5000 (3900 in UG & 1300 PG) seats are reserved for NRI students which accounts for approximately 15% of the total seats.
Apart from engineering, options like Computer Science, IT, Defence Services, Merchant Navy, etc. are also available for PCM students.
Medical science requires strong memorization and learning skills. Physics, Chemistry, and Biology (PCB), are the core subjects of medical science.
Bachelor of Medicine & Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) & Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) are the most popular career choices for medical aspirants. For Indians and NRI students, India boasts the world’s prominent medical institutes like AIIMS, JIPMER, etc. that open a plethora of career opportunities for students worldwide.
In order to pursue MBBS from a prestigious medical institute in India, students are required to qualify the national level entrance exam NEET (National Eligibility Cum Entrance Test).
Here again, due to the limited number of seats available, competition is fierce. However, for Indian expatriates in Gulf & other foreign nations, NRI quota or reserved seats for Non-Resident Indian students in some government / private medical colleges/ deemed universities and JIPMER Puducherry (for the MBBS program) is applicable.
Physiotherapy, Psychology, Pharmacy, Agriculture, Biotechnology, Nutrition & Dietetics are some of the options available in the medical field.
Surely for NRI students, there’s an advantage of the NRI quota, however, they still need to crack competitive exams like JEE & NEET which have extremely high difficulty levels & cut-throat competition levels. Keeping the exams’ competitiveness in mind, experts recommend that aspirants start their preparation early and prepare diligently under the guidance of proficient academic experts.
Ideally, JEE & NEET preparations should be started from grade 11th, since the syllabus for both exams encompasses the entire NCERT syllabus of both classes 11th & 12th. For guidance and academic support to crack these examinations, nothing beats ALLEN Career Institute Overseas.
