On the 4th of April, CBSE announced the New Exam Format for Classes 11 & 12, which will be applicable from the academic year 2024-25. According to this new exam update, CBSE will focus more on concept application questions instead of long-form questions.

CBSE New Exam Format for Classes 11 & 12:

According to the new CBSE guidelines, the competency-based questions in MCQs/case-based questions, source-based questions, or any other type of questions weightage in Classes 11 and 12 have increased from 40% to 50%. On the other hand, the constructed response questions (short answer questions/ long answer type questions, as per the existing pattern) have reduced from 40% to 30%. In contrast, the weightage for select response type questions (MCQ) remains the same as previously, i.e., 20%. All these new updates will be applicable from the session 2024-25.

Joseph Emanuel, Director (Academics), CBSE, has stated that the board has taken multiple steps toward implementing Competency-Based Education in schools. These steps include aligning assessments to competencies, developing exemplar resources for teachers and students, and continuously building the capacity of teachers, among others, as per the National Education Policy 2020.

The board’s main emphasis was to create an educational ecosystem that would move away from rote memorisation and towards learning that is focused on developing students’ creative, critical, and systems-thinking capacities to meet the challenges of the 21st century.

Students are advised to prepare and plan their studies according to the CBSE New Exam Format for Classes 11 & 12. Stay tuned for more information!

We wish you all the best for your future exams!
