NIRF stands for the National Institutional Ranking Framework. It is an initiative of the Government of India that aims to rank higher education institutions in India based on various parameters and promote excellence in education. The framework was launched by the Ministry of Education (MoE) erstwhile Ministry of Human Resource Development, MHRD, in 2015.

The framework evaluates institutions across different disciplines, including engineering, management, pharmacy, architecture, law, and overall university rankings. The ranking methodology takes account of various parameters such as teaching, learning and resources, research and professional practices, graduation outcomes, outreach and inclusivity, and perception.

The rankings are released annually and provide students, parents, and other stakeholders with information about the quality and performance of educational institutions in India. NIRF rankings have become an important reference point for students seeking admission to higher education institutions and for institutions themselves to assess their strengths and areas for improvement.

Students often anticipate NIRF rankings to know about the best colleges and universities in India. This becomes even more crucial when they are eyeing the top institutions in one of the most competitive fields in the country, i.e. Engineering.

NIRF Ranking 2023 of Engineering Colleges in India based on several parameters. The specific criteria used for ranking engineering colleges by NIRF are as follows:

  • Teaching, Learning, and Resources (TLR): This criterion evaluates the quality and effectiveness of teaching, including student-teacher ratio, faculty qualification and experience, faculty-student ratio, and student perception of teaching and learning. It also considers the availability and adequacy of infrastructure, library facilities, and other learning resources.
  • Research and Professional Practice (RPC): This criterion assesses the research output and impact of the engineering college. It considers parameters such as research publications, patents filed and granted, funded projects, collaborations, and the availability of research facilities and infrastructure.
  • Graduation Outcomes (GO): This criterion focuses on the outcomes of the engineering education provided by the college. It considers metrics such as the number of students graduating, their employability and placements, average salary packages, and the percentage of students pursuing higher education or entrepreneurship.
  • Outreach and Inclusivity (OI): This criterion evaluates the efforts made by the engineering college to promote inclusivity, diversity, and outreach. It considers factors such as the percentage of students from different backgrounds (gender, social, and economic), initiatives for economically and socially disadvantaged students, and the extent of community engagement and social outreach activities.
  • Peer Perception: NIRF considers the perception of peers, including academic experts, employers, and industry professionals. It includes surveys and feedback from experts who evaluate the overall quality and reputation of the engineering college.

It’s important to note that each parameter carries a specific weightage in the NIRF ranking methodology. The weights assigned to these criteria may vary from year to year, as NIRF periodically reviews and updates its ranking methodology to ensure its relevance and effectiveness.
