CBSE Class 12 2026-27

CBSE Class 12 – Overview (2026-27 Academic Year)

Class 12 is a milestone that every student remembers for years. After clearing your Class 10 board exams, you have already crossed one big hurdle. But Class 12 is different. The subjects are deeper, the questions ask you to think more, and the results play a huge role in shaping your future career. That is why students, parents, and teachers all pay close attention to this year.

Compared to Class 10, the level of difficulty in Class 12 is noticeably higher. You are expected to understand complex ideas, apply them to new situations, and write answers that show real clarity. But here is the good news — with consistent effort and the right guidance, scoring well is absolutely possible. A strong percentage in Class 12 board exams opens doors to your desired college and course. It also gives you the confidence to face competitive exams like JEE, NEET, CUET, and many others.

Why Class 12 board exam results matter

Your Class 12 marks are often the first thing colleges and universities look at. Whether you are applying for engineering, medical, law, commerce, or humanities, your board exam percentage matters. Many entrance exams also have eligibility criteria linked to your Class 12 score. Beyond admissions, a good result gives you a sense of achievement and self-belief. It tells you that you can handle pressure and come out successful.

But do not let this pressure scare you. Thousands of students appear for CBSE Class 12 exams every year, and a large number of them do very well. They are not superhumans. They simply plan their studies, stay consistent, and ask for help when needed. You can do the same.

What to expect in CBSE Class 12 (2025-26)

The academic year 2025-26 will follow the CBSE curriculum for the 2026 board examinations. You will continue with the same stream you chose in Class 11 — whether that is Science (PCM or PCB), Commerce, or Humanities. The subjects you studied in Class 11 will continue into Class 12, but the topics will be more advanced.

The assessment includes theory exams, practicals (for science subjects), and internal assessment. Your final result is calculated based on all these components. Knowing the exam pattern, marking scheme, and subject-wise weightage is important, but more on that in our detailed pages.

Subject structure at a glance

Every CBSE Class 12 student studies five compulsory subjects plus optional subjects and internal assessment. Here is a simple breakdown:

  • Language I: English or Hindi (compulsory)
  • Language II: Another language or an academic elective
  • Subjects 3, 4, and 5: Your core stream subjects — for example, Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics (PCM) or Physics, Chemistry, and Biology (PCB) for science students
  • Subject 6 (optional): You can add one more language, academic elective, or skill elective
  • Internal assessment subjects: General Foundation Course, Physical and Health Education, Work Experience

Most students focus on their five main subjects, but the optional sixth subject can sometimes replace a low score if planned well. We recommend talking to your school teachers before making any decisions about subject combinations.

What comes after Class 12?

Your journey does not stop with board exams. Depending on your stream, you will appear for various competitive exams. For science students, JEE Main, JEE Advanced, NEET, BITSAT, and CUET are common paths. Commerce students often prepare for CA, CS, CMA, or university entrance tests. Humanities students appear for CUET, university-specific exams, or direct admissions based on board marks.

Starting your preparation for these exams alongside your Class 12 studies is a smart move. But do not overload yourself. First, focus on understanding your NCERT textbooks thoroughly. Competitive exam preparation will build on that foundation.
