Conducted by different organisations around the world, Olympiads measure students’ skills through various examinations. Students of Class 1 to Class 12 are eligible to sit for these exams. These examinations add value to a student’s overall academic background. Olympiad exams can be broadly classified into 3 categories National, International and Private Olympiads.

Types of Olympiads:

There are different types of Olympiads that can be categorised based on the conducting body, subject, and region in which they are conducted. National and international Olympiads are conducted for subjects, namely, Science, Maths, Physics, Chemistry, Astronomy, Social Science and Computer.

Olympiads Eligibility:

To be eligible for the Olympiad exams, students must fulfil the eligibility criteria set by the Olympiad conducting body. The general eligibility for olympiads is that the students must be currently in school pursuing studies between Class 1 and Class 12.

Olympiads Exam Structure:

Olympiad examinations are divided into sections, and each section tests various abilities and subject knowledge of the students.

The general Olympiad exam structure consists of one section covering subject knowledge and a second section covering the students’ aptitude through logical reasoning and aptitude tests.

The difficulty level depends on the class the student is studying. Most of the Olympiads follow the CBSE syllabus. The exams are multiple choice question based (MCQ).

Olympiads Exam Schedule:

The examination dates for the various Olympiads have been declared well in advance to give students enough time to start their preparations and precisely schedule anything else. Furthermore, because some Olympiads are held in multiple stages, the schedule helps students choose the best possible time.

Olympiad – How to apply:

Students can apply for the Olympiads through their school or independently.

Apply through school: The concerned school must be the Olympiad’s partner school. Students can directly approach the school authorities and apply.

Apply directly: If the school is not a partner of the Olympiad conducting body, students can directly apply through the Olympiad’s official website.

How To Prepare for Olympiad Exams:

  • Read the syllabus thoroughly.
  • Set daily targets; consistency is the key.

  • Revise and take mock tests.
  • Practice through the previous year’s sample papers.

Olympiad Ranking:

The rankings are awarded based on marks obtained by the students in that particular Olympiad. Sometimes, when two students score the same marks, the timing is considered for measuring the rank. If the time is also found to be the same, both students are awarded the same rank.

Indian Olympiads:

Indian Olympiads are conducted by the Homi Bhabha Centre For Science Education (HBCSE), Indian Association of Physics Teachers (IAPT), National Talent Search Exam (NTSE), and Indian School Talent Search Exam (ISTSE)

Homi Bhabha Centre For Science Education (HBCSE):

The HBCSE Olympiads are the stepping stone to participating in the international Olympiads. The Olympiads are conducted in five stages, namely,

  • National Standard Examination
  • Indian National Olympiad
  • Orientation Cum Selection Camp
  • Pre Departure Camp
  • International Olympiad

The teachers association of each subject conducts the first stage of the exam. NSEs are conducted in Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Maths, Astronomy and Junior Science.

Indian Association of Physics Teachers (IAPT):

IAPT conducts National Standard Examination in Physics, after which HBCSE organises the Indian National Olympiads. Therefore, students can directly apply on the IAPT portal for NSEP 2022.

National Talent Search Exam (NTSE):

National Council for Educational Research and Training (NCERT) is the organising body for NTSE. It is conducted in two stages:

  • Stage 1: State-Level Examination. To participate in NTSE, students must qualify for the state-level examination. The selections for the state-level examinations are based on merit and are decided by the state authority.
  • Stage 2: National Level Examination: NCERT conducts this exam. Students in Class 10 are eligible to take part in this exam.

Indian School Talent Search Exam (ISTSE):

Conducted on an international level for students of Classes 1 to 10, ISTSE is an Indian Olympiad. The exam tests the students’ subject knowledge and their potential in mental and logical reasoning.

International Olympiads:

International Olympiads are designed to test students’ academic knowledge in participating countries. Therefore, students who participate in International Olympiads must have qualified for the National Science Olympiads of their respective countries.

International Olympiads are a great way to entrust the promotion of STEM knowledge to the world’s young minds.

Foundations like National Olympiad Foundation (NOF), Science Olympiad Foundation (SOF), Indian Talent Olympiad (ITO), CREST Olympiads, Unicus Olympiads, Silver Zone Foundation, HummingBird Olympiad Exams and EduHeal Foundation are among the most popular ones.

Ei ASSET UAE:

Ei ASSET UAE, also known as Education Initiatives ASSET, is a platform which provides an assessment mechanism for schools through its students. The exam takes place once a year, and countries like India, UAE, and Singapore are known to be active participants.

IJSO or International Junior Science Olympiad:

IJSO is an International-level exam conducted for students below the age of 16. The main objective of the exam is to promote the natural sciences among students and to develop their interest in pursuing careers as scientists and researchers.

IJSO 2022 is scheduled in Columbia from December 2 to December 12, 2022. It will be the 19th edition of the IJSO Olympiad.

IPhO or International Physics Olympiad:

IPhO is an International-level Olympiad conducted for physics. This exam aims to promote friendly competition between students worldwide.

This year the exam noticed the participation of around 400 students who have made their mark in the National Olympiads.

IChO or International Chemistry Olympiad:

As the name suggests, IChO is conducted for Chemistry. The exam serves as a pavement for International exposure to students worldwide. Before entering the IChO, a student must have excelled in the national-level Olympiads of their respective countries. The exam is conducted at the higher secondary level to promote education in Chemistry.

IBO or International Biology Olympiad:

International Biology Olympiad is an exam that brings Biology enthusiasts worldwide together. The main aim of the exam is to promote and inspire Biological Science among students and to bring out the scientists of tomorrow. IBO 2022 will conclude in Armenia on July 18, 2022.

IOAA or International Olympiad in Astronomy and Astrophysics:

IOAA is one of the unique Olympiads that takes place Internationally. Olympiad has completed 16 years of promoting Astronomy and Astrophysics studies among students. Therefore, students who are 16 years of age and currently pursuing Class 12 can participate in IOAA.

IMO or International Mathematical Olympiad:

IMO 2022 was conducted in Oslo on July 6 – 16, 2022. The Olympiad is a global event to promote the scope of Mathematics among students in their higher secondary. Participation in IMO requires students first to compete and win in the NMO.

IOI or International Olympiad in Informatics:

The IOI is an International-level Olympiad conducted for Informatics. The Olympiad aims to promote Computer Science and Information Technology studies among students. The Olympiad also features several workshops, seminars and training for students to participate in and gain exposure.

IESO or International Earth Science Olympiad:

The International Earth Science Olympiad was founded by the International Geoscience Education Organisation (IGEO). It is a Class 12 level exam. The Olympiad focuses on educating and empowering students in Earth Sciences at school. To participate in IESO, students have to qualify for the NSO.

International Foundation Olympiads Exam Overview:

International Foundation Olympiads Exam Dates:

IFO exam registrations have begun. The last date to register for the International Foundation Olympiads Exam is October 30, 2023. The exam is 60 minutes and can be taken anytime between 5 pm and 8 pm.
