NEET 2026 Exam Pattern

The National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET-UG) is conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA) in offline mode (pen-and-paper based). The examination pattern is prescribed by the National Medical Commission (NMC) and published in the official NEET-UG information brochure.

NEET-UG 2026 is expected to be held on the First Sunday of May 2026 (tentatively 3rd May 2026). Candidates must familiarize themselves thoroughly with the exam pattern, marking scheme, subject-wise distribution, and language options to prepare effectively and avoid last-minute confusion.

Special Marking Rules

  • If a candidate marks two or more options on the OMR sheet for the same question, the answer is considered incorrect, and 1 mark is deducted.
  • If more than one option is found to be correct (as per the final answer key), +4 marks will be awarded to all candidates who marked any of the correct options.
  • If all four options are found to be correct (rare case), +4 marks will be awarded to all candidates who attempted the question (irrespective of which option they marked).

NEET-UG 2026 – Duration & Time Management

  • Total Duration: 3 hours (180 minutes) for all candidates.
  • PwD Candidates: Candidates with benchmark disabilities (40% or more) are eligible for 1 hour compensatory time, making the total duration 4 hours (240 minutes).
  • Time per Question: On average, candidates have 1 minute per question. However, since Biology has 90 questions, candidates should allocate:
    • Physics: 50–55 minutes
    • Chemistry: 45–50 minutes
    • Botany & Zoology: 75–80 minutes (combined)
    • Revision: 5–10 minutes at the end

NEET-UG 2026 – Medium of Examination (Languages)

Important Instructions Regarding Exam Language

  • Candidates who select English will receive a Test Booklet in English only.
  • Candidates who select Hindi or any other regional language will receive a bilingual Test Booklet – English and the chosen language in parallel columns.
  • In case of any ambiguity or discrepancy in translation, the English version of the question shall be considered final and binding.

NEET-UG 2026 – OMR Sheet Filling Instructions

  • Ballpoint pen only: All answers must be marked on the OMR sheet using a blue or black ballpoint pen. Pencils are not permitted.
  • No erasing/obliteration: Changing answers on the OMR sheet is not permitted. Erasing or obliterating any information printed on the OMR sheet is a serious offence and may lead to disqualification.
  • Test Booklet Code: Candidates must write and darken the Test Booklet Code on the OMR sheet. Failure to do so may result in incorrect evaluation.
  • Rough Work: Rough work should be done only in the space provided in the Test Booklet. No additional sheets are permitted.
  • OMR handling: The OMR sheet is a sensitive document. Candidates must not fold, staple, or mutilate it in any way.
  • Signature and thumb impression: Candidates must sign and provide thumb impression in the designated spaces as per instructions.
