NEET 2026 Eligibility Criteria

Candidates must ensure that they meet all NEET-UG 2026 eligibility criteria before applying for the examination. The eligibility criteria are prescribed by the National Medical Commission (NMC) and the National Testing Agency (NTA). Any candidate found ineligible at any stage of the admission process – even after qualifying the exam – will be summarily disqualified, and their candidature will be cancelled.

The NEET-UG 2026 eligibility criteria cover the following parameters:

NEET-UG 2026 – Nationality / Citizenship Eligibility

The following categories of candidates are eligible to appear for NEET-UG 2026:

  • Indian Nationals
  • Non-Resident Indians (NRIs)
  • Overseas Citizens of India (OCI)
  • Persons of Indian Origin (PIO)
  • Foreign Nationals

Note: OCI and PIO candidates are eligible for admission under the same categories as Indian nationals, subject to the rules and regulations of the concerned universities/colleges and the Government of India.

NEET-UG 2026 – Age Limit

Lower Age Limit

Candidates must have completed 17 years of age as on 31st December 2026. This means candidates must be born on or before 31st December 2009 to be eligible.

Upper Age Limit

There is no upper age limit for NEET-UG 2026. The previous upper age restriction of 25 years (30 years for reserved categories) was removed by the National Medical Commission (NMC) in 2018. Candidates of any age can appear for NEET provided they meet all other eligibility criteria.

NEET-UG 2026 – Educational Qualification

Candidates must fulfil the following educational requirements to be eligible for NEET-UG 2026:

  • Qualifying Examination: Candidates must have passed the Class XII (or equivalent) examination from a recognized board/university.
  • Appearing Candidates: Candidates who are appearing for their Class XII examination in 2026 are also eligible to apply. Such candidates will be granted provisional admission subject to submission of passing certificates and fulfilling the minimum marks criteria by the deadline specified by NTA/counselling authorities.
  • Mandatory Subjects: Candidates must have studied the following subjects in Class XII:
    • Physics
    • Chemistry
    • Biology / Biotechnology
    • English (as a compulsory subject)
  • Practical Component: The above science subjects must include practical tests/laboratory work as part of the curriculum.

NEET-UG 2026 – Minimum Qualifying Marks in Class XII (PCB Aggregate)

Candidates must secure the following minimum aggregate marks in Physics, Chemistry, and Biology/Biotechnology taken together in the qualifying examination:

Important: Candidates must also pass in each subject individually (Physics, Chemistry, Biology/Biotechnology, and English) as per the pass criteria of their respective board.

NEET-UG 2026 – Qualifying Examination Codes

While filling the NEET-UG 2026 application form, candidates must select the appropriate Qualifying Examination Code that corresponds to their educational background. The codes are as follows:

Code Description
CODE: 01 Candidates appearing for Class XII board examination in 2026 and awaiting results. Such candidates are provisionally eligible subject to submission of passing certificates and qualifying marks by the prescribed deadline.
CODE: 02 Higher/Senior Secondary Examination or Indian School Certificate Examination (ISCE) – 12-year study cycle, with Physics, Chemistry, Biology/Biotechnology, and English as core subjects, as prescribed by NCERT.
CODE: 03 Intermediate / Pre-degree Examination in Science from an Indian University/Board or recognized examining body, with Physics, Chemistry, Biology/Biotechnology, and English as main subjects, including practical tests.
CODE: 04 Pre-professional / Pre-medical Examination conducted after passing Higher Secondary/Pre-university examination, with Physics, Chemistry, Biology/Biotechnology, and English, including practical tests.
CODE: 05 First year of a three-year degree course from a recognized University, with Physics, Chemistry, and Biology/Biotechnology as main subjects, including practical tests. Candidate must have passed the previous qualifying examination (10+2) with the prescribed subjects.
CODE: 06 B.Sc. degree examination from a recognized Indian University, with at least two of the subjects from Physics, Chemistry, Biology (Botany, Zoology),/Biotechnology. Candidate must have passed the previous qualifying examination (10+2) with Physics, Chemistry, Biology, and English.
CODE: 07 Any other examination equivalent to 10+2 (comprising Physics, Chemistry, Biology/Biotechnology with practical tests) recognized by the Association of Indian Universities (AIU) as equivalent to Intermediate Science Examination of an Indian University/Board.

Candidates who have passed the qualifying examination in a foreign country must select this code.

NEET-UG 2026 – Number of Attempts

There is no restriction on the number of attempts for NEET-UG. The National Medical Commission (NMC) removed the limit on attempts in 2018. Candidates can appear for NEET any number of times, provided they meet all other eligibility criteria (age, educational qualification, etc.) for that particular year.

NEET-UG 2026 – Eligibility for NRI / OCI / PIO / Foreign Nationals

NRI (Non-Resident Indian) Candidates

  • Definition: Indian citizens residing abroad for employment, business, or education, holding valid NRI status as per FEMA guidelines.
  • Eligibility: NRIs are eligible to appear for NEET-UG 2026 and seek admission under the 15% NRI Quota in private medical colleges and deemed universities.
  • Academic Requirement: Must have passed Class XII (or equivalent) with Physics, Chemistry, Biology/Biotechnology, and English, securing 50% aggregate marks in PCB.
  • Documents Required: Valid passport, NRI status proof (employment certificate, visa, work permit, residency proof of parent/self), Class X and XII certificates.

OCI (Overseas Citizen of India) and PIO (Person of Indian Origin) Candidates

  • Status: OCI and PIO cardholders are eligible for admission under the same categories as Indian nationals, subject to the rules of the concerned institutions and Government of India.
  • Eligibility: OCI/PIO candidates must appear for NEET-UG 2026 and meet all other eligibility criteria (age, marks, subjects).
  • Documents Required: Valid OCI/PIO card (both sides scanned), passport, Class X and XII certificates.

Foreign Nationals

  • Definition: Citizens of countries other than India, not holding OCI/PIO status.
  • Eligibility: Foreign Nationals are eligible for admission to medical/dental colleges in India, subject to the rules and regulations of the respective state governments, institutions, and the Government of India.
  • Academic Requirement: Must have passed Class XII (or equivalent) with Physics, Chemistry, Biology/Biotechnology, and English, securing 50% aggregate marks in PCB. Equivalency of foreign qualification must be certified by the Association of Indian Universities (AIU).
  • Documents Required: Valid passport, Citizenship Certificate/Embassy Certificate, AIU equivalence certificate (if applicable), Class X and XII certificates.

IB / GCSE / Advanced Placement Candidates

  • Candidates who have completed the International Baccalaureate (IB), GCSE, or Advanced Placement (AP) curriculum are also eligible for NEET-UG 2026.
  • Such candidates must ensure that their qualifying examination is recognized as equivalent to Class XII by the Association of Indian Universities (AIU).
  • The subjects studied must include Physics, Chemistry, Biology/Biotechnology, and English, with the prescribed minimum aggregate marks.

NEET-UG 2026 – Eligibility for B.Sc Nursing

Candidates seeking admission to B.Sc Nursing programmes through NEET scores must fulfil the following eligibility criteria:

Age Limit

Same as NEET-UG: Candidate must have completed 17 years of age as on 31st December 2026 (born on or before 31.12.2009). No upper age limit.

Educational Qualification

  • Qualifying Examination: Class XII (or equivalent) from a recognized board.
  • Mandatory Subjects: Physics, Chemistry, Biology/Biotechnology, and English (compulsory).
  • Minimum Aggregate Marks:
    • General Category: 45% aggregate in PCB
    • SC/ST/OBC Category: 40% aggregate in PCB
    • PwD Candidates: 3% reservation (as per INC norms)
  • Open School Candidates: Candidates who have completed Class XII from a State Open School recognized by NIOS with the prescribed subjects are also eligible.

NEET-UG 2026 – 15% NRI Quota – Detailed Eligibility

The 15% NRI Quota is a special reservation category in private medical colleges and deemed universities. Candidates seeking admission under this quota must meet the following conditions:

Who is Eligible for NRI Quota?

  • Non-Resident Indians (NRIs): Indian citizens residing abroad for employment, business, or education.
  • Persons of Indian Origin (PIO) and Overseas Citizens of India (OCI): Valid PIO/OCI cardholders.
  • Children of Indian citizens working abroad: Even if the candidate is residing in India, they may be eligible under NRI quota if their parents hold valid NRI status.
  • Children of State/Central Government employees: Posted in Indian missions/deputations abroad.
  • Indian-origin students: Born in a foreign country or residing/studying abroad.

Conditions for NRI Quota Eligibility

  • NEET Qualification: Candidate must have qualified NEET-UG 2026 with valid scores.
  • Bonafide NRI Status: Only genuine/bonafide NRIs shall be allotted seats under the NRI Quota. Submission of false documents will lead to disqualification and legal action.
  • Valid Passport: Candidate (or parent/sponsor) must possess a valid passport with proof of NRI status.
  • Financial Sponsor Relationship: The NRI sponsor (father, mother, brother, sister, uncle, aunt) must be related to the candidate by blood. The relationship must be clearly documented.
  • Academic Eligibility: Candidate must meet the standard NEET eligibility criteria (age, marks, subjects) as applicable to Indian nationals.

NEET-UG 2026 – 15% All India Quota (AIQ) Eligibility

The 15% All India Quota (AIQ) seats are allocated for admission to undergraduate medical/dental courses in government medical colleges across India (except Jammu & Kashmir – subject to specific conditions).

Eligibility for 15% AIQ Seats

  • Nationality: Indian Nationals, NRIs, OCIs, PIOs, and Foreign Nationals are eligible.
  • NEET Qualification: Candidate must qualify NEET-UG 2026 and obtain a valid rank.
  • Candidates from Jammu & Kashmir: Candidates from J&K are not eligible for 15% AIQ seats unless they submit a self-declaration form along with the NEET application form, stating that they are willing to forego home state counselling and participate in AIQ counselling. Such candidates will also be eligible for seats in Deemed Universities, ESIC, AFMC, and Central Universities.

Additional Eligibility: Candidates who qualify NEET 2026 are also eligible for 100% seats in Deemed Universities, Central Universities, ESIC, and AFMC, subject to the rules of the respective institutions and counselling authorities.

85% DU (Delhi University) Institutional Quota

  • Eligibility: Candidates who have passed Class X and Class XII from schools located in the National Capital Territory (NCT) of Delhi are eligible for the 85% DU Institutional Quota seats.

AMU (Aligarh Muslim University) Institutional Quota

  • Eligibility: Only AMU students are eligible for the AMU Institutional Quota seats.

NEET-UG 2026 – 85% State Quota Eligibility

The 85% State Quota seats are reserved for candidates who meet the domicile/residence requirements of the respective State/Union Territory. Counselling for these seats is conducted by the appropriate state authorities.

Eligibility Criteria for State Quota Seats

  • Domicile Requirement: Candidates must possess a valid domicile certificate of the respective state (varies by state).
  • Residence Requirement: Some states require candidates to have studied and passed Class X and/or Class XII from schools within the state.
  • NEET Qualification: Candidate must qualify NEET-UG 2026.
