JEE Advanced 2023 Eligibility Criteria

JEE (Advanced) 2023 eligibility criteria for the candidates has been announced by IIT-Guwahati, the conducting authority. The have established 5 prerequisites, and candidates must meet all of them in order to appear for the advanced engineering examination.

Criteria include:

  1. Criterion 1 – Performance in JEE (Main) 2023
  2. Criterion 2 – Age limit
  3. Criterion 3 – Number of attempts
  4. Criterion 4 – Appearance in Class XII (or equivalent) examination
  5. Criterion 5 – Earlier admission at IITs

Criterion 1 – Performance in JEE Main 2023

The first and most important requirement is that the candidate must be among the top 2,50,000 qualifying candidates (this includes students of all categories) in B.E./ B.Tech. Paper of the JEE (Main) 2024  Below is an estimated table listing category-wise percentages of candidates who can be shortlisted.

*PwD applicants are eligible for a 5% horizontal reservation in each of the 5 categories.

*If there are “tied” ranks/scores in any category, the total number of candidates may increase somewhat from 2,50,000.

Criterion 2: Age Limit

Candidates born on or after 1st October 1998 are eligible for JEE (Advanced) 2024 However, SC, ST, and PwD candidates have 5 years of relaxation, which means that the candidates born on or after 1st October 1993 are eligible to apply for the advanced examination.

Criterion 3: Number of attempts

JEE (Advanced) may only be taken twice in two consecutive years.

Criterion 4: Class XII or Equivalent Qualification

  • Any candidate who appeared or will appear in Class XII or equivalent examination for the first time in 2023 or 2024 with the subjects Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, A Language and any other subject from the mentioned four is eligible to take JEE (Advanced) 2024
  • Candidates who appeared in Class XII (or equivalent) for the first time in 2022 or before are ineligible to sit for JEE (Advanced) 2024 unless they are covered by the one-time special measure.

Note: When we say ‘appeared in Class XII (or equivalent) examination,’ we imply that the board in question released the results for that year, regardless of whether or not the exam was held. Even if the result of a certain candidate is withheld, it will be counted as an appearance. However, there are two circumstances that follow, if the examination board of Class XII or equivalant:

Criterion 5 – Earlier admission at IITs

The following are the candidates who will be eligible to appear for JEE Advanced 2024

  • Candidates enrolled in a preparatory course at any IITs for the first time in 2023 are eligible to take JEE Advanced in 2024
  • Candidates who had been offered a seat at an IIT through JoSAA 2023, but

(i) did not report “online” / at any “reporting centre”

OR

(ii) withdrew before the last round of seat allotment,

OR

(iii) had their seat cancelled (for whatever reason) before the last round of seat allotment for IITs.

The applicants must still meet the eligibility criteria from 1 through 4 to appear for JEE Advanced 2024
