How to apply for admission to Engineering Colleges in India:

To apply for undergraduate courses in the different engineering colleges in India, you have different exam options. These options include appearing for:

  • JEE Main Exam + Advanced Exam: IITs, NITs, IIITs & Government Colleges.
  • Some other exams are BITSAT, VITEEE, etc.

Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) Admission Process:

Admission to the prestigious IIT (Indian Institute of Technology) is the dream of every NRI student. The only way to secure admission to an IIT is by appearing for the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE). Therefore, it is highly recommended that you take the JEE exam if you aspire to study in one of the 23 IITs in India. This will increase your chances of getting admission into your desired IIT colleges.

Eligibility Criteria for Exam:

It is mandatory for every student who wishes to apply for an exam to fulfil the eligibility criteria set for that particular exam. To get admission to the top IITs, appearing in the JEE Exam is necessary. Therefore, it is important to understand the eligibility criteria before applying for the exam. The students can apply for the exam only if they have met all the eligibility requirements. Given below are all the important details that one should keep in mind.

  • Candidates should have been born on or after October 1, 1999.
  • A candidate should have appeared for the Class XII (or equivalent) examination for the first time in either 2023 or 2024 with the subjects Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics as compulsory subjects.
  • The Candidates must satisfy at least one of the following two criteria with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics as compulsory subjects in the year of first appearance in the Class XII (or equivalent examination):
  • Must have passed class XII (or equivalent) Board examination with a minimum of five subjects and secured at least 75% aggregate marks.
  • Must have passed the Class XII (or equivalent) Board examination with a minimum of five subjects and be within the top 20 percentile of successful candidates in their respective Class XII (or equivalent) board examination.

Note: NRIs aiming for IITs must take the JEE Examination; no special quotas or alternatives are available.

Documents Required:

  • Parents’ resident certificates issued by the embassy of the residing and IT-compliant country are proof of the parents’ residency.
  • Passport/ Visa/ Resident Visa for identity proof of the candidate.
  • Employment Letter of either parent for employment proof.
  • Citizenship of the candidate for residential proof.
  • Income tax documents as per the IT Act 1961 are used for income proof.
  • Class X & XII marksheets.

Admission Process in NITs & CFTIs:

NITs (National Institute of Technology) and CFTIs (Centrally Funded Technical Institutions) are esteemed engineering colleges in India and highly reputable.

DASA Scheme:

The MHRD (Ministry of Human Resource Development) launched the Direct Admission to Students Abroad (DASA) scheme in 2001 to cater to the interest of NRIs worldwide in NITs in India.

Eligibility for DASA/CIWG Scheme:

To qualify for the DASA scheme:

  • Students must complete at least two years of education, including their 11th and 12th grades, in a foreign country within the last eight years.
  • A minimum score of 60% is required in the 12th grade.
  • NRIs, PIOs, and OCIs living and studying abroad for the past two years are eligible.
  • There is no age limit for appearing in the JEE Main exam.
  • Students awaiting their class 12th exam results can also apply.

Documents Required for Admission:

During admission, candidates must produce originals and photocopies of various documents, including allotment letters, pass certificates, scorecards, passports, etc.

Reserved Seats for CIWG Candidates:

5% of supernumerary seats are reserved for the CIWG category, i.e., 1/3 seats from the DASA quota.
